The "dominions"

A map showing Ravensberg Castle and the associated land surrounding the fortress dates from 1741. Castles always included extensive properties. These plots of land and rights of use owned by the sovereign are known as "domains". In earlier times, they were used to provide for the inhabitants of the castle. Later, when the fortress lost its importance as a seat of power and administration, the lords leased out the domains and thus generated lucrative income. In addition to fields on which grain was grown, there were also pastures and meadows as well as ponds. There were also groves and areas where peat was mined. The names of some parcels of land indicate the former form of use or their nature: Cattle once grazed on the "Kuhkamp", the "Kreps Teich" was home to crabs and the "Sandt Brinck" indicates a sandy subsoil. The "lange Rott" to the north of the castle is evidence of clearing activities to make previously deserted areas arable and usable for agriculture.

In the 18th century, the bailiff of Ravensberg leased this land. He conducted his administrative business from the "Kuhof", the farmyard or so-called Vorwerk belonging to the castle. He also kept livestock there, including a flock of sheep. The domains also included milling facilities. A bakehouse completed the buildings of the Kuhof. The bailiff also cultivated hops for brewing beer. The Kuhof was demolished in the first half of the 19th century.

O-Ton of the vassal Grethe Leefferman from Borgholzhausen-Berghausen

In the 16th century, the lord of Ravensberg owned numerous so-called vassals in the vicinity of Ravensberg Castle. One of them, Grethe Leefferman from Borgholzhausen-Berghausen, talks about her sometimes deprived life and what it meant to be a "Eigenbehörige".
