Foundation Burg Ravensberg

By the 18th century at the latest, Ravensberg Castle had completely lost its original functions. From then on, the old walls only served as a home for the foresters who oversaw the surrounding state forest. The once proud fortress fell into disrepair and became a ruin. In the 19th century, in the age of "Romanticism", the first attempts were made to save the historic building from final decay. Restoration measures were actually carried out, but they did not prove to be particularly sustainable.

At the time, the castle and the surrounding forest belonged to the Prussian state and, after the end of the Second World War, to the newly founded state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Although the responsible forestry administration took care of the forest, it showed little interest in preserving Ravensberg Castle as a cultural center. As a result, massive damage to the building became apparent in the early 2000s. The state decided to sell the property. There were protests against this plan in Borgholzhausen and the surrounding area. When the state government nevertheless refused to back down from its plan, numerous committed people set up a charitable foundation. The "Ravensberg Castle Foundation" officially began its work on July 1, 2004. Initially, the restoration and preservation of Ravensberg Castle was on the agenda. This opportunity was used for extensive archaeological investigations. In addition, the foundation has set itself the task of promoting nature conservation and environmental protection, local history and cultural preservation. The "Ravensberg Classroom", in which educational programs are carried out, is particularly worthy of mention in this context. The castle has thus become an extracurricular place of learning. In addition, theater performances and other festivities take place on the grounds. The former forester's lodge is available as a restaurant and regular baking days are held in the bakehouse.
