The castle is falling into ruin

By the 18th century at the latest, Ravensberg Castle had completely lost its original functions. From then on, the old walls served merely as a residence for the foresters who oversaw the surrounding state forest. The once-proud fortress fell into increasing disrepair and became a ruin. In the 19th century, during the “Romantic” era, the first efforts were made to save the historic structure from complete ruin. Restoration work was indeed carried out, but it proved to be not particularly sustainable.

Preserving the Ruins

At the time, the castle and the surrounding forest belonged to the Prussian state and, after the end of World War II, to the newly founded state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Although the responsible forestry administration took care of the forest, it showed little interest in preserving Ravensberg Castle as a cultural center. As a result, by the early 2000s, the structure was showing signs of massive damage. The state decided to sell the property. This plan sparked protests in Borgholzhausen and the surrounding area. When the state government nevertheless refused to back down from its plan, numerous dedicated individuals founded a nonprofit foundation. On July 1, 2004, the “Ravensberg Castle Foundation” officially began its work. Initially, the restoration and preservation of Ravensberg Castle were at the top of the agenda. This opportunity was used to conduct comprehensive archaeological investigations. In addition, the foundation has made it its mission to promote nature conservation, environmental protection, and the preservation of local heritage and culture. Of particular note in this context is the “Ravensberg Classroom,” where educational programs are held. The castle has thus become an extracurricular learning center. In addition, theater performances and other festivities take place on the grounds. The former forester’s lodge serves as a restaurant, and baking days are held regularly in the bakehouse.
